DSBA Announces Grant Recipients & Award Winners

Posted on 07-15-2009

The Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association (DSBA) is pleased to announce the winners of its two special individual awards. Dan Dickerson, pictured here, play-by-play voice of the Detroit Tigers, is winner of the Ty Tyson Award for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting, and Will Tieman of the Spartan Sports Network is the recipient of the Kathy Best “Best of the Best” Award for media/public relations.

Previous Ty Tyson Award winners include Ernie Harwell, Ray Lane, Budd Lynch, Mark Champion, Josh Lewin, Jim Brandstatter, Ken Kal and George Blaha. Previous Best of the Best Award recipients include Kathy Best, Bruce Madej, Jim Streeter, Mark Engel, John Lewandowski, Matt Dobek, Bill Keenist, Mike Murray, Risa Balayem, Tyler Barnes, Tommy Cameron, Dennis Davidson and George Eichorn.

The DSBA also proudly announces the awarding of nearly $9,000 in DSBA Grant Funds to the following broadcast schools or programs in Michigan:

·        Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts (students Keith Bessler and Jennifer Pozzi each receive $500 scholarships for tuition assistance)

·        Haslett High School (student-run Vision22 television station)

·        River Rouge High School (district broadcast arts program)

·        Warren Cousino High School (student-run WPHS-FM radio station)

“We are delighted to reach out to the community through these awards and the distribution of our grant funds,” said DSBA Executive Director George Eichorn. “Our recent golf outing was sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance and that level of support went a long way toward fulfilling our mission to give back to the future sports broadcasters in the state. These grants will assist the two Specs Howard students with tuition and help the other schools with enriching their broadcast programs through the purchase of much-needed equipment.”

Call the DSBA at 586-558-9103 for more details. Thank you.
